Richard Klimoski
Dean of the School of Management and Professor of Psychology
George Mason University
Richard Klimoski is the Dean of the School of Management and Professor of Psychology at George Mason University. Klimoski received his Ph.D. in Psychology and Management from Purdue University in 1970. Prior to coming to George Mason, Klimoski was on the faculty of the Ohio State University for twenty-five years, and holds the position of Professor Emeritus there. He was named Dean in spring of 2002 after serving as interim dean since July of 2001.

Klimoski came to George Mason University in 1995 to lead and strengthen the Industrial Organizational Psychology graduate program. In 2001, it became the university's highest ranked program, at 8th in the nation, in the US News and World Report's Best Graduate Schools rankings edition.

In his early days as dean, Klimoski immediately hired eleven of the best young scholars in their fields to join the faculty. He has launched aggressive alumni, corporate, fundraising and graduate recruitment operations, and is spearheading initiatives in research and entrepreneurship. Under Klimoski's leadership, the School launched SOMTimes, a bi-annual magazine, which is distributed to over 22,000 friends, alumni and business leaders. SOM has re-energized its alumni chapter and created an active advisory board made up of business leaders from the region. Last fall, U.S. News and World Report ranked the School of Management among the top 20% of undergraduate business programs, up from the top 25% in 2002.

Dr. Klimoski's teaching and research interests center on performance management issues at both the level of the individual and the work team. He is currently investigating the role of leadership in project teams. His research has been published extensively and has appeared in the Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, and Journal of Conflict Resolution. He was the Editor of the Academy of Management Review (1990-1993) He has co-authored: Research Methods in Human Resource Management (1992), The Nature of Organizational Leadership (2002), Emotions in Work Organizations (2002).

Dr. Klimoski is a Fellow of several scientific societies including the Academy of Management, the American Psychological Society, the American Psychological Association and the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology (SIOP). He served as President of SIOP from 1991-1992. He serves on the board of the Century Club, and of the Stevie Awards, an awards program for businesses.
